Sharp's
Living
in Belize, Marie Sharp grew up with hot peppers and the various
fresh fruits, vegetables, and spices that we associate with
the area. Its probably not surprising then that when she started
to experiment with creating her own hot sauce the result was
something special. In particular the use of carrots and lime
juice create a sauce that is distinctive and has become recognized
as the "Belizean Style".
By
1981 Marie Sharp's home creations had become so popular that
Marie decided to turn the operation into a business and with
the help of the family and friends Marie Sharp's Fine Foods
Ltd. was setup in Dangriga, in the south of Belize. The factory
now employs over 20 people and manufactures for the local
market as well as exporting worldwide.
With a total population of less than a quarter of a million
the people of Belize are a close community and intensely proud
of their country. Marie's family-owned business takes great
pride in producing products of the highest quality and marketing
them under the slogan "Proud Products of Belize."
There are a number of sauces in the range including the fearsomely
hot Belizean Heat,
typical of the sauce commonly used by the locals.
Marie Sharp is synonymous with the country of Belize. Belize
is located on the east coast of Central America, surrounded
by Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean Sea. Once part of
the Mayan and Spanish Empires it thinks of itself as both
Central American and Caribbean. It was known as British Honduras
until 1973 and only became an independent country in 1981.
The origin of the name Belize is uncertain, but possibly from
the Mayan word belix, meaning "muddy water", referring
to the Belize River.
